Europe's Heatwave: A Gentle Reminder to Take Care of Yourself This Summer

Europe's Heatwave: A Gentle Reminder to Take Care of Yourself This Summer

There comes a point every summer when the sunshine stops feeling like a treat and starts feeling exhausting.

This year, many parts of Europe have experienced day after day of soaring temperatures. While sunny weather brings holidays, beach days, and long evenings with family and friends, it also places extra demands on our bodies.

At Real Life Healing, we wanted to take a moment to remind you to be kind to yourself during this hot weather. Sometimes it's the simplest things that make the biggest difference.

When temperatures climb, your body works continuously to keep itself cool.

You sweat more.

You lose fluids more quickly.

Along with that water, you also lose important minerals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Many people don't realise they're becoming dehydrated until they already feel unwell.

The signs aren't always obvious.

You might notice:

  • Feeling unusually tired
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dizziness
  • Brain fog
  • Dry skin or lips
  • Feeling irritable
  • Difficulty sleeping

Often, we blame the heat itself, when in reality our bodies are asking for a little extra support.

Drinking Water Is Important… But Sometimes It Isn't Enough

We're all told to drink more water during summer and that's excellent advice.

But if you're sweating heavily, exercising, travelling, or spending long days outdoors, your body is also losing valuable electrolytes.

These minerals help regulate hydration, support muscle function, and keep your nervous system working as it should.

Adding electrolyte rich foods or a quality electrolyte supplement when appropriate, can help replace what your body naturally loses during periods of intense heat.

Longer daylight hours, warmer nights, and disrupted routines often make getting a good night's sleep more difficult.

If you've been waking up feeling restless or struggling to fall asleep, you're certainly not alone.

Keeping your bedroom cool, reducing screen time before bed, and maintaining a consistent evening routine can all help improve sleep quality during the warmer months.

Don't Forget Your Skin

Our skin works hard to protect us every day.

During hot weather it faces stronger UV exposure, salt water, chlorine, wind, and frequent showers that can leave it feeling dry.

After spending time in the sun, gentle hydration both inside and out, can help keep your skin feeling comfortable.

Cooling aloe vera gel, plenty of fluids, and eating water-rich fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries are simple ways to support healthy skin throughout summer.

One of the best things about summer is the incredible variety of fresh produce available.

Try filling your plate with colourful fruits and vegetables such as:

  • Watermelon
  • Cucumber
  • Berries
  • Tomatoes
  • Leafy greens
  • Citrus fruits
  • Pineapple

These foods provide water, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that naturally support your body during warmer weather.

Sometimes the simplest meals are exactly what we need.

We're often encouraged to make the most of every sunny day.

But it's also perfectly okay to rest.

If your body feels tired, listen to it.

Take breaks in the shade.

Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.

Wear light, breathable clothing.

Looking after ourselves also means looking after those around us.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

Before heading out for the day, consider packing a few essentials:

  • A refillable water bottle
  • Electrolytes if you're likely to sweat heavily
  • Fresh fruit for natural hydration
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A healthy snack

These small habits can make a big difference when temperatures soar.
